City of God by Ceceila Holland

Nicholas Dawson, secretary to the ineffectual ambassador of Florence. He soon comes under the power of Cesare Borgia, son of Pope Alexander. Borgia uses Nicholas as a pawn in the game of power, placing him in harms way. Dawson, with no way of escape, must play his part and hope for the best. But danger stalks closer and closer.

I really enjoyed this "behind the scenes" look at Pope Alexander's court. I loved that it was told by someone close, but not someone famous. Dawson is perfect; shrewd, canny and thoughtful. I liked his tender heart, though it was hidden at times. I also liked that this book lacked some of the other "drama" linked to the name Borgia, especially the whiff of inter familial relationships. This book is perfect political drama!

Thanks to the publisher for a review copy.

  2. This was my first Cecelia Holland book. I loved that she made the Borgia family almost normal. I'm definitely going to have to read more of her books!
