Juliet's Nurse by Lois Leveen

After tragically losing her unexpected daughter after birth, Angelica is given a post as the wet nurse to Lord Cappelleto's new daughter, Juliet. During the first years of Juliet's life, Angelica is her mother, taking care of her. Angelica misses her husband, Pietro, but takes care to see him on occasion. After Pietro dies, Angelica dedicates her life solely to Juliet. When her birthday party brings unexpected guests, Juliet falls for the stranger. And so begins the story of star crossed lovers.

Told from the perspective of Juliet's nurse, this book gives a far different view of Shakespeare's famous tale. Angelica was a great nurse, but I felt sorry for Juliet at times. She was almost viewed as property by her father, and her mother was not a mother at all. I also felt sorry for Pietro. I enjoyed the book, getting to see some of the characters as children made more sense.

Thanks to the publisher for a review copy.
